Powerful, Spooky Images of Shamans in Latin America
In what economists like to call the developed world, we’ve mostly thrown out our rituals and superstitions. But in a country like Peru, with a rich cultural heritage, rampant poverty, and a 45% indigenous population, the average person might not be so inclined to visit a medical doctor. These curanderos are respected and trusted similarly to doctors, as they heal spiritual and physical problems alike. I guess you shouldn’t knock it until you try it, but I think I’m going to stick to Tylenol for my headaches. That is, unless my headache is actually the spirit of my grandfather trying to climb out of my skull- then I might give this guy a call.
